TO$STRING : ( "DEAR KOREAN ARTIST" ) _ is a web work created due to a project 'How To Move the House' which is facilitated by curator and artist Yap Sau Bin, coordinated by Seoul-based artist Son Hyemin to take place in Malaysia from Dec 7th to 19th in Kuala Lumpur and Cyberjaya.
I was invited to contribute a set of One-to-One instructions dedicated to group of Korean participants, in making guide instructions for them to explore and travel around the city for the duration of six hours. During the explorations they could be required to collect photos, sounds, materials, or find for a specific taste, smell, person, places, and etc.
I created the body of work where the set of instructions were hosted on several different sites across the web, in a form of 14 postcards, accessed only by QR codes that link one postcard to another. At the end of the instructions, the participant would have to find the last QR code which contains a note at the final location directed.
By disguising the image and motives of Malaysian flag across the postcards, replacing the 14-pointed-star on the flag that represents 14 states in Malaysia with 14 hidden QRs that were linked from one to another, together with my personal image collections of the places, juxtaposed with the imagery on the streets explored and imagery on the websites, under the current state of first political reformation. The work wish to expand the narration and include the backstories of a location, a place, or even a country; an exploration of images and narration that was intertwined and co-exists with each other, just sometimes hidden, concealed, overlooked or buried.
