Moving Voices, Stories from the Block : Gangster Land
Collaboration with FreedomFilmFest and BFM Radio, 2016
Gangster Land / 4 min 30 secs
2016
This video is part of a series of 6 short animated real stories of residents in an urban poor temporary longhouse settlement community in Jinjang Utara (North) in Kuala Lumpur. After having waited for more than 26 years since relocating here in 1990 from different parts of the city, families here are yet to see the promises for permanent homes being fulfilled. The 1,000 urban poor families who mostly work in the city and cannot afford the city’s high rental rate, continue to stay here despite the dilapitation, gangsterism and drug related activities.
The FREEDOMFILMFEST initiated this project to record the voices of this seldom-heard community and to make them into short videos so that more people will become aware of their situation. This project was done in collaboration with BFM Radio and students of the DASEIN Academy of Art.
