Sound Inspecting, Inspecting Sound

Wood, Light Bulb, Paper, Print on OHP Paper

31cm x 22.5cm x 22.5cm

2015

This project surrounds a theme about messages that was being retold or passed down from one to another and its meaning slightly changes as time goes by / as the point of view changes.

Sound as in a form carries the meaning of communication, or as a signal itself, to notify others, or as an individual existence. Sound is formed through vibration, where the vibration caused the medium that surrounds it, such as air to vibrate. The vibration forms longitudinal waves where under the help of device I captured them and use them as textures in this work.

I use sound waves as textures to convey about human communication. Different people have different messages or imagination that they wish to deliver or have in mind when they are speaking. The overlapping soundwaves acts as different messages that people wish to convey, and it forms a different landscape or outlook when they were placed side by side / overlapped together / when you see the sequence as a whole.

This is an interactive device that requires participants to move the light in order to see different perspectives of the sound scape. Participants can choose to position the light behind the soundscape frame to highlight a certain soundscape / changing the position of light / turn the zoetrope to see the soundscape as a whole / other ways as they could think of.

Shadows will be formed depending on the position of light, which way / from what angle we inspect the sound scape. Shadows that were produced by the light hitting the sound scape will form a slightly clear, blurred or vague outlook, depending on the distance of the light source with the object. Under inspection, the shadows seems like a message that travelled through different mediums and at last it is blurred / deformed / lost it’s initial context.

While it is easy to move or tilt and play around with the sound strip zoetrope or phenomenon, much effort is needed in order to move the light, to dissect different perspective of truth or reality.
